Elderly parent not answering the phone: what to do
You call your mom. It rings out. You call again, and again nothing. Your mind goes straight to a fall.
Most of the time, the reason is simple and they call back within the hour. But you need a plan for the times when they do not, so you know what to do next instead of calling ten times.
The usual reasons
- The phone is in another room, in a bag or in a coat pocket
- The phone is on silent, or the ringer is too quiet for them to hear
- The battery is empty
- They are asleep, in the shower, in the garden or out shopping
- They are on another call, or at the doctor
- They did not recognise the number, so they did not answer
What to do, step by step
- Wait a little, then call again. Leave a short voice message and send a text, so they can answer when they see it.
- Try another way. Call the landline if they have one, or send a WhatsApp message and look at when they were last online.
- Call someone close by. A neighbour, a friend, a sibling who lives nearer or the concierge of their building.
- Ask someone with a key to go. This is often the fastest real check, and it is the step that families most often have not set up.
- Ask for a wellness check. If nobody can go, and you have a real reason to worry, call the local police on their non-emergency number and ask them to check on your parent. See how to request a wellness check.
- Call the emergency number if you think it is an emergency. That is 911 in the US, 999 in the UK and 112 anywhere in the EU.
Signs that it is more urgent
Move faster through the steps above when:
- They were unwell, had a fall or came home from hospital recently
- They missed something they never miss, like a daily call or a doctor's appointment
- It is very hot or very cold
- The phone has been off since last night, or goes straight to voicemail
- A neighbour says the curtains are still closed, or the post is still in the box
Make the next time easier
Talk about it on a calm day, not right after a scare. Agree on a few simple things:
- If they miss your call, they send a short text when they see it
- One neighbour or friend has a key, and you have their number
- The phone stays charged and close to them, with the ringer loud enough
- Everybody in the family knows who to call first
How AmiFam helps on these days
AmiFam is an Android app that shares a normal day from what the phone already does. When your mom does not answer, you open AmiFam and see her day so far. For example:
- Started the day at 8:10 and charger unplugged at 9:30. The phone is in use, so she is probably busy. Try again later.
- Phone turned off at 23:40, nothing since. The phone may be empty or off, so you call the neighbour sooner.
You can also get a notification when her phone is not used for 3, 6, 12 or 24 hours during her day, so you hear about a quiet phone before you start to worry. She chooses what to share, and AmiFam never shares her location, messages, calls, contacts, photos or the apps she uses.
AmiFam does not call emergency services. It tells the family, and the family decides what to do.
