When an elderly parent refuses help

You bought the alarm, and it is in a drawer. You suggested a cleaner, and the answer was "I am not dead yet". You worry, and every talk about it ends in a fight.

This is one of the most common problems families describe. The good news: most parents do not refuse help. They refuse help that makes them feel old, watched or managed.

Why parents say no

How to talk about it

  1. Pick a calm moment. Not in the hospital corridor, and not on the phone while you are upset.
  2. Start with their wishes. Ask what they want to happen if they fall, or feel unwell at night. Who should know first?
  3. Talk about your worry, not their weakness. "I lie awake when you do not answer" lands better than "You are not safe on your own".
  4. Offer choices, not a plan. People accept what they chose. Bring two or three options and let them pick.
  5. Make it a trial. "Let us try it for two weeks, then talk again" is much easier to agree to than "from now on".
  6. Make it mutual. If they also see that you are OK, it is not one-way watching.
  7. Bring in someone they trust. Sometimes the same idea is easier to hear from their doctor or an old friend.
  8. Let some things go. Win the one that matters most, and come back to the rest later.

Help that is easier to say yes to

Help that keeps their life the same is accepted most easily:

When it is about safety

An adult has the right to make choices that you think are risky, as long as they understand them. If you notice that their memory or their understanding is changing, talk to their doctor. If you think they are in danger right now, call the emergency number.

Where AmiFam fits

AmiFam was built for parents who say no to alarms and cameras. It is an Android app that shares a normal day from what the phone already does, so your parent has nothing to wear, press or charge apart from the phone they already use.

Because AmiFam calls no one, keep a personal alarm as well if your parent needs someone to come to them in an emergency.
